Horticulture Committee

The Horticulture Committee advises the Board of Trustees on horticultural matters in support of the Trust's mission to encourage and improve the science, education, conservation, art, and practice of orchid horticulture worldwide. The Committee also promotes the sustainable and responsible cultivation of orchids.

What the Committee does

The Committee works with World Orchid Conference (WOC) organizers on the horticultural side of each conference. Its work includes:

  • Advising on exhibitors and commercial vendors for the WOC Show, and on importing and exporting plants, including CITES requirements and phytosanitary certification.
  • Encouraging a Botanical Art Exhibition and other exhibits such as stamps, arts, and crafts.
  • Recommending horticultural speakers and helping balance horticultural content in the conference program.
  • Advising on horticultural tours held during and after each WOC.
  • Recommending nominees for the WOCT Horticulture Medal.
  • Gathering feedback after each conference and recommending updates to the Trust's hosting guidelines and checklist.

Judging Subcommittee

The Judging Subcommittee gives specialist advice on judging exhibits, plants, posters, and botanical art. It also maintains the WOCT Judging Handbook and can help verify judges' accreditation when requested.

Membership

The Committee's members have recognized expertise in orchid horticulture. At least one member is a Trustee. The Chair is appointed by the President, and members serve three-year terms.
